Launched in 2003 Generic Design Lab (GDL) performs as a private independent research platform focussing on the exploration of applied design methodology. Since then GDL has been hosted by several university institutes in Europe with the aim to manoeuvre independently in the world of design research and architectural teaching.
It is our general aim to fuse our practical experience in design and building processes with an own theoretical approach. This approach reflects the consciousness for historical and contemporary tendencies in the continuous development of architecture as an art that is deeply rooted in society. It goes beyond a purely formal understanding of architectural expression (or even ‘language’) focussing mainly on the organizational conditions and/or influences that determine the creation of architecture. To unfold the potential combinatorial importance of these conditions we follow an a proach that oscillates between the analytical evaluation of existing/possible conditions and a rather intuitive urge for invention which is expressed through form. As form is the result of geometrical prescription, the precise control of geometrical conditions is the key to any architectural expression. Thus, during the past years, we have developed various universal techniques or tools that visualize and evaluate these relations.
