Engending Geometry
Münster University of Applied Sciences, MSA
summerterm 2004
In summer 2004 we have contributed to a Masters Seminar on the future development of the former "Kraft durch Freude-Seebades" Prora, located on the island of "Rügen", that has been led by Prof. Kirsten Schemel.
Our main focus laid on the creation of generic design tools with a strong link to the realm of geometry. Instead of following a modernistic approach by using a rather descriptive application of geometry we based the given tasks on an understanding of geometry as being able to proactively engender connections, organization and space.
The vast horizontal main yard of Prora demanded different organizational, programmatic, atmospheric, spatial and formal connections than the development of high-rises. However due to a comparable XXL-scale both projects have been approached with a similar way of analytic. Thus the course has designed different relational models of nodes between these different demands. Similarly to the former seminar on high-rises, the creation of generic design tools helped the students to cope with the project's difficulties in terms of scale, variety of influences and architectural articulation of key installations.
