STRUCTURAL FORM - STEEL MASTERCLASS 2004
05.2005, Berlage Institute, Rotterdam/NL

Launch of Structural Form. Steel Masterclass 2004, Berlage Institute, Rotterdam, edited by Christian Veddeler:

The technological, constructional, architectural and conceptual possibilities of steel have been researched in the Steel Masterclass, Structural Form. The Berlage Institute, Rotterdam collaborated with Archiprix, Samenwerkende Nederlandse Staalbouw and Bouwen met Staal to build up this highly intense steel think tank.

The Steel Masterclass of 2004, the third in a row of five, was directed at new assignments, to go beyond the daily practice of construction towards the unconventional, ranging from actual to the imaginary. Young talented architects and construction engineers, including Berlage Institute students, guest students from Sci-Arc, Los Angeles, Archiprix-nominees and talents from TU Delft and TU Eindhoven, worked together in the Steel Masterclass. The aim was to explore the innovative applications of steel by researching the technological and cultural potentials of the material.

The results, a palette of research and development, of innovative steel concepts and strategies, are documented in the publication Structural Form, edited by Christian Veddeler. Together with the upcoming exhibition the results are to be brought to the attention of architects and engineers, architectural educational institutions, steel-producers and users in the Netherlands and abroad.
